Italian Frosted Glass + Iron Hanging Light Diffuser, 1960s

$4,800.00

There’s something especially romantic about a piece that was made for one particular home.

Sourced from a house in Piedmont, Italy, this 1960s hanging diffuser was custom made to suspend beneath an existing ceiling light, transforming the glow from above without ever being electrified itself.

At just over four feet wide, a single expanse of frosted glass is shaped into a shallow curve and suspended from four iron chains. Across its surface, hand-worked iron branches seem to grow in from the edges, scattered with leaves and joined by a small bird in flight. Look closely and the maker’s hand is everywhere, from the irregular outlines of the leaves to the subtle bends and variations in each slender stem.

The effect changes completely once the light is turned on. The frosted glass becomes softly illuminated while the botanical ironwork falls into silhouette, almost like looking up through branches against the sky. Even unlit, the transparency of the glass allows the shadows of the ironwork to become part of the composition.

It’s remarkable that a piece of this scale and delicacy has survived, particularly with its original curved glass intact. More architectural object than conventional light fixture, it carries the specificity of something made for a particular interior and never intended to be reproduced.

Please note: This piece is not electrified and was designed to hang beneath an existing ceiling-mounted light source.
