Italian Ivory Ceramic Shell Bowl, 1970s

$400.00

An Italian ceramic shell bowl from the 1970s, its low form opening into a dramatically folded rim. The edge rises and falls in deep waves, giving the bowl a different silhouette from every angle.

Fine ridges run across the ivory exterior like the growth lines of a shell, while the interior is smoother and more luminous. Its glaze shifts from cream to soft blush and warm champagne tones, with an iridescent sheen visible where light catches the folds.

The natural form is carried through the whole piece. The ribbed surface gathers toward the base, grounding the broad, open bowl, while the high points of the rim cast shadows into its interior. Signed “Italy” underneath, it has the presence of a found shell translated into ceramic at an exaggerated scale.

On a dining table or console, it would be compelling left empty, allowing its changing profile and glaze to remain the focus. It is a vessel that works equally well as a sculptural centerpiece.
