Italian Wood + Parchment Console by Ignazio Gardella, 1950s

$4,000.00

An Italian wood and parchment console by Ignazio Gardella from the 1950s, with a slender frame and an unexpected oval drawer suspended beneath the top.

The long, narrow surface is inset with pale parchment beneath glass, its softly mottled cream tones framed by a rounded wood border. The glass protects the parchment while allowing its natural variation and subtle tonal shifts to remain visible. Against the deeper reddish brown of the structure, the parchment introduces a sense of luminosity, while the thin edge and gently projecting ends keep the top visually light.

Below, four tapered legs open into a slight splay, joined at either side by an arched opening. Two shaped stretchers span the frame, dipping gently near the legs before rising to support the central drawer. Small brass fasteners punctuate the woodwork, making the construction part of the ornament.

The drawer gives the console its particular character. Its curved casing and elongated oval front read almost as a separate object held within the frame, with a single round brass pull at the center. Opened, it reveals a discreet place for small essentials; closed, it becomes the focus of the piece.

In 1947, Gardella co-founded Azucena with Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua, bringing furniture into the same creative practice as the buildings they designed. That connection between room and object feels especially relevant here, where the supports, open space, and carefully placed drawer form a small architectural composition.

In an entry, beneath a mirror, or along a bedroom wall, the console offers a useful surface while leaving the space around it open. Its appeal rests in the meeting of precise proportions and warmer details: parchment beneath glass, richly toned wood, and a drawer whose unusual shape rewards a closer look.
