Pair of French Perforated Metal Sconces in the Manner of Mathieu Matégot, 1950s
Balancing geometric precision with the warmth and texture of perforated metal, a pair of French wall sconces from the 1950s, in the manner of Mathieu Matégot.
Each sconce is composed around a softly rounded metal backplate and a perforated sheet-metal diffuser, the repeated pattern allowing light to filter through in a delicate field of points. A gilt border frames the diffuser, introducing a note of warmth against the more graphic metalwork.
The perforation is central to the character of the pair. When illuminated, the pattern becomes almost textile-like, casting a finely textured glow across the wall while partially revealing the light source behind it.
