Swedish Brass Bar Cart by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, 1950s

A rare 1950s bar cart by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Sweden. The frame, crafted entirely from solid brass, bends and curls in rhythmic lines, with two oversized wheels echoing the swirling motifs that thread through Frank’s body of work. Dual perforated trays are rendered in sheet brass and topped with a fitted glass surface above, while three circular bottle holders sit recessed in a solid brass panel to the side. A fixed brass tray hangs beneath, adding warmth and tonal depth.

Equally suited to function or flourish, the cart can be styled with cut crystal and sculptural decanters for a classic drinks setup, or reimagined as a display surface—topped with a floral arrangement, a small lamp, or a stack of books.

Josef Frank (1885–1967) stands as one of the most influential figures in modern Swedish design. An Austrian-born architect who made his mark in Stockholm, Frank introduced a design language rooted in color, comfort, and individuality—rejecting the severity of early modernism in favor of warmth and expressive form. He believed a home should reflect personal history, not rigid taste, and that beauty lay in diversity rather than uniformity.

Over his prolific career with Svenskt Tenn, Frank created more than 2,000 designs across furniture, lighting, textiles, and decor. His style merged floral motifs, organic silhouettes, and mixed materials like wood, stone, and bamboo, drawing influence from English Regency to Chinese antiques. Frank’s work continues to define the joyful, humanistic spirit of Swedish modernism.
