French Art Deco Copper + Saint-Gobain Glass Console, 1930s
The materials are what first draw you to this French Art Deco console from the 1930s. A substantial one-inch-thick Saint-Gobain glass top rests above sweeping copper supports and a warm wood base.
The copper is formed into two continuous bands, curling inward at the base and again beneath the top. Above, the textured glass has a subtle green cast along its edges, with its considerable thickness becoming part of the design.
The glass was produced by Saint-Gobain, the historic French glassmaker founded in the 17th century under Louis XIV. By the early 20th century, the company was closely associated with advances in architectural and decorative glass, and its work became part of some of the period’s defining interiors. It was notably used in Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verre in Paris, completed in the early 1930s.
Saint-Gobain could make glass at a level that was unusual for the period, and the thickness and depth seen here are evidence of that expertise. At just under three feet wide, the proportions make it particularly versatile.
