French Oak Swivel Bar Cabinet by Charles Dudouyt, 1940s
A French oak swivel bar cabinet by Charles Dudouyt, designed in the 1940s. Rotating compartments, open shelving, and concealed storage transform a practical cabinet into an object of continual discovery, where each turn reveals another layer of the design.
Constructed in solid French oak, the exterior reads as a wooden volume, its surface warm and tactile, with a grain that feels both grounded and elemental. The form is compact and rectilinear, elevated on turned legs. Beneath the cabinet, a stretcher connects the legs in a continuous, hand-turned rhythm, giving the piece a sense of stability and ornament.
At rest, the chest presents itself as a closed architectural block—serene, self-contained, almost monastic in its simplicity. But within this stillness lies its transformation.
The front panel opens to reveal a concealed swivel bar system, unfolding like a mechanism hidden within a cabinet of rituals. The interior is carefully engineered: a rotating wooden frame fitted with evenly spaced pegs and tiered platforms designed to organize bottles and glassware in suspended order.
As it turns outward, the structure reveals itself not all at once, but in stages—each layer exposing another level of function, like a private theatre set behind a wooden façade.
