French Swing Arm Sconce Attributed to René Mathieu for Maison Lunel, 1950s
This French swing arm sconce is as much about balance as it is about light.
Attributed to René Mathieu for Maison Lunel in the 1950s, a long, slender metal arm extends from the wall, supported by a fine tension rod that allows the light to swing and reposition while maintaining its light profile. At the end, an expansive parchment shade seems to float in space, finished with hand-laced stitching and a smaller conical shade above.
Mathieu was part of a generation of French designers rethinking lighting in the 1950s, often using articulated arms and adjustable shades to give fixtures greater flexibility. His work for Maison Lunel is particularly associated with inventive wall-mounted lighting, where the mechanics become part of the design rather than something to conceal.
Here, that approach is especially apparent. The shade can be adjusted to direct the light, while its generous proportions cast a warm, diffused glow through the parchment. Even at its substantial scale, the fixture feels weightless against the wall.
