French Verdigris Bas-Relief Panel, 1970s

$4,400.00

A French bas-relief panel from the 1970s, conceived less as decoration than as a quiet intervention across the wall. A frieze-like composition that evokes ancient procession scenes, intentionally partially obscured via the artists intent.

Stretching to nearly six and a half feet, the format is distinctly horizontal, more architectural than pictorial. It reads as a line drawn through space, anchoring what sits beneath it. Over a sofa, a console, or a dining table, it establishes a horizon, giving structure to the room without enclosing it.

Carved in wood and finished with a verdigris patina, the surface carries the depth of time. Tones shift across the panel, deep green, oxidized blue, traces of underlying warmth, so the piece feels weathered rather than applied. The texture is active, worked by hand, with marks that catch light unevenly and create a sense of movement across its length.

Within this surface, figures begin to emerge. Not fully articulated, but suggested, abstracted human forms that appear and recede depending on how the light meets them. They are not meant to be read immediately. Instead, they reveal themselves gradually, embedded within the material, as if discovered rather than depicted.

It is this restraint that defines the piece. A composition that holds presence without insistence, where scale, texture, and suggestion work together to shape the atmosphere of a room, less an object to look at, and more a surface to live with.
