German Gouache + Watercolor on Paper Painting No. 04 by Franz Hirsch

$650.00

A German gouache and watercolor on paper painting by Franz Hirsch, rendered as a highly expressive close-up portrait of a tilted face suspended in emotional immediacy.

The composition isolates the head in close proximity, removing any surrounding context so the image resolves almost entirely through gesture and surface. The slight tilt of the face introduces a sense of imbalance and immediacy, as if the figure has been interrupted mid-thought, held in a suspended emotional state.

Transparent watercolor washes establish the underlying structure of the work, spreading in fluid, bleeding fields of amber light and deep violet shadow. These softer layers define the atmospheric depth of the portrait, allowing color to drift and settle across the paper with organic variation. Over this foundation, thicker gouache brushstrokes introduce opacity and weight, carving out the contours of the eyes, nose, and facial planes with greater definition.

Signed by the artist, the work invites close viewing, where layered color and gesture reveal themselves gradually. Colors drift beyond natural observation, shaping mood and space while emphasizing the emotional character of the portrait. Soft transitions dissolve into sharper accents, allowing the image to move between delicacy and intensity in a single surface.

Franz Hirsch (1924–2010) was a German painter based in Munich whose work reflects the expressive spirit of postwar European modernism. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold compositions, rich color, and an interest in the emotional qualities of everyday subjects, landscapes, and the human figure.

A founding member of the Free Academy of Munich (Freie Akademie München), Hirsch was an active participant in the city's artistic community and exhibited throughout Bavaria during his lifetime. His diverse body of work was the subject of numerous regional exhibitions, including a retrospective presentation at Galerie Entoderweder in Dorfen in 2009. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their painterly energy, strong visual presence, and balance between abstraction and representation.
