German Relief Block Print No. 08 by Franz Hirsch
A German relief block print by Franz Hirsch, where portraiture is reduced to structure, line, and contrast.
Rendered as a stark black impression on off-white paper, the composition depicts a stylized head assembled from angular planes and geometric fragments. The image is carved, linocut or woodcut, rather than drawn, with the artist allowing the untouched paper to emerge through the matrix as sharp, chiseled lines. These negative spaces define the features as much as the ink itself, creating a face that feels simultaneously architectural and human.
The relief printing process leaves a directness in the mark-making. Black ink is rolled across the raised surface of the block and pressed onto paper, producing bold fields of color interrupted by deliberate cuts and incisions. The result is graphic yet tactile, with each carved line revealing the hand of the maker.
The composition is contained within a rough-hewn printed border that echoes the character of the image itself. The monochromatic palette heightens the sense of form, drawing attention to the interplay of light, shadow, and geometry rather than surface detail.
Franz Hirsch (1924–2010) was a German painter based in Munich whose work reflects the expressive spirit of postwar European modernism. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold compositions, rich color, and an interest in the emotional qualities of everyday subjects, landscapes, and the human figure.
A founding member of the Free Academy of Munich (Freie Akademie München), Hirsch was an active participant in the city's artistic community and exhibited throughout Bavaria during his lifetime. His diverse body of work was the subject of numerous regional exhibitions, including a retrospective presentation at Galerie Entoderweder in Dorfen in 2009. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their painterly energy, strong visual presence, and balance between abstraction and representation.
