German Relief Print + Linocut No. 13 by Franz Hirsch
A German relief print and linocut on paper by Franz Hirsch, shows three abstracted figures standing together within a field of sweeping contours, their forms emerging through bold black relief lines that feel simultaneously graphic and hand-drawn.
Printed over a luminous metallic green-gold ground, the composition is built through contrast. The dark ink establishes structure and weight, while the colored background matrix introduces light, creating a subtle shift in tone as the surface catches changing conditions throughout the day. The result is a work that feels both grounded and atmospheric, balancing solidity with movement.
The language of the linocut remains visible throughout. Carved marks flow across the figures and into the surrounding space, dissolving the distinction between subject and background. Rather than isolating the forms, the composition binds them together within a continuous network of lines, giving the scene a communal quality. The three figures appear less as portraits than as archetypes—connected by gesture, proximity, and shared presence.
Franz Hirsch (1924–2010) was a German painter based in Munich whose work reflects the expressive spirit of postwar European modernism. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold compositions, rich color, and an interest in the emotional qualities of everyday subjects, landscapes, and the human figure.
A founding member of the Free Academy of Munich (Freie Akademie München), Hirsch was an active participant in the city's artistic community and exhibited throughout Bavaria during his lifetime. His diverse body of work was the subject of numerous regional exhibitions, including a retrospective presentation at Galerie Entoderweder in Dorfen in 2009. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their painterly energy, strong visual presence, and balance between abstraction and representation.
