German Woodcut No. 15 by Franz Hirsch

$450.00

Rendered in stark monochrome, a German woodcut on paper by Franz Hirsch, shows the human figure into something both elemental and unresolved.

The composition centers on a seated, headless form, its posture conveying weight and introspection without relying on facial expression or narrative detail. The image is shaped through the physical language of relief printing.

Hundreds of fine-lined gouges sweep across the background, creating a dense field of chattered texture that catches and redirects the eye. These rhythmic incisions bear the unmistakable mark of woodcarving tools cutting into the matrix, transforming the surface into a record of both image and process.

The contrast between the dark silhouette of the figure and the energetic linear pattern surrounding it generates a tension. The body appears grounded and monumental, while the background seems to vibrate with movement, light, and shadow.

Franz Hirsch (1924–2010) was a German painter based in Munich whose work reflects the expressive spirit of postwar European modernism. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold compositions, rich color, and an interest in the emotional qualities of everyday subjects, landscapes, and the human figure.

A founding member of the Free Academy of Munich (Freie Akademie München), Hirsch was an active participant in the city's artistic community and exhibited throughout Bavaria during his lifetime. His diverse body of work was the subject of numerous regional exhibitions, including a retrospective presentation at Galerie Entoderweder in Dorfen in 2009. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their painterly energy, strong visual presence, and balance between abstraction and representation.
