Italian Mahogany + Travertine Coffee Table Attributed to Paolo Buffa, 1950s

$4,200.00

An Italian mahogany and travertine coffee table attributed to Paolo Buffa from the 1950s, the broad circular top is crafted from travertine, its softly polished surface revealing a natural composition of cream, beige, pale green, and warm taupe.

Irregular veining and subtle variations in tone move across the stone, giving the tabletop a depth and character that contrasts with its simple geometric outline. The slender profile and gently rounded edge allow the substantial stone surface to appear remarkably light.

Beneath the top, a tapered mahogany pedestal introduces a deep reddish-brown tone, bringing warmth and verticality to the composition. The wood's visible grain and rich finish provide a visual counterpoint to the pale stone above. At its base, an ornamental brass collar is worked with raised foliate motifs, recalling classical architectural decoration and introducing an element of traditional Italian craftsmanship.

The pedestal rests on an expressive four-footed brass base, its sweeping legs extending outward in a series of graceful curves. Each foot rises gently at the tip, creating a silhouette that feels almost animated. Fine applied brass detailing follows the length of the legs, emphasizing their movement and bringing texture to the aged metal surface.

The attribution to Paolo Buffa is particularly fitting in the relationship between classical ornament and modern proportion. Working in Milan during the mid-century period, Buffa developed a distinctive approach to furniture that combined the traditions of Italian cabinetmaking with increasingly refined and contemporary silhouettes. His designs often incorporated luxurious materials, expressive metalwork, and carefully considered decorative details, balancing elegance with a strong sense of structure.
