Designed in Italy during the 1960s, is this rare ‘Bilobo’ pendant by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Flos.

The pendant balances industrial precision with the softness of hand-worked glass. A cylindrical body of anodized aluminum descends from the ceiling with a restrained, almost mechanical clarity, its cool metallic surface contrasting the organic character of the diffuser below.

The Murano glass shade carries the irregular texture of bubble glass, formed as air becomes trapped within the molten material during the blowing process. When illuminated, the surface comes alive—scattering light through countless small pockets suspended within the glass, softening the glow into something atmospheric rather than direct. The rounded form feels cloudlike beneath the more structured aluminum stem, a dialogue between refinement and spontaneity that defined much of the Scarpas’ work.

There is a distinct sense of proportion in the piece. The elongated suspension gives the pendant presence without heaviness, allowing it to occupy space vertically, almost like a suspended object rather than a conventional light fixture. Even unlit, it holds a sculptural calm.

Afra Bianchin Scarpa (1937–2011) and Tobia Scarpa (b. 1935) were a Venetian design duo known for their refined, functional approach that bridged tradition and innovation. Trained at the University of Venice, they began their collaboration in 1958, starting with Murano glass and expanding into architecture, lighting, and furniture.

Together, they worked with major firms including Cassina, Flos, and B&B Italia—shaping the language of Italian modernism. Tobia Scarpa, still active today, has earned numerous accolades including the Compasso d’Oro and the iF Design Award. Their works are held in the permanent collections of MoMA New York, the V&A London, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
