Teak + Cognac Leather ‘Japan’ Sofa by Finn Juhl for France & Søn, Denmark 1957

$8,900.00

A rare and early edition 3 Seat ‘Japan’ Sofa designed by Finn Juhl for France & Søn in 1957. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese construction methods, this concept is realized through the use of brass connections to elegantly separate the backrest from the teak framework. The sublime simplicity of the backrest, which rests on the slightly tapered legs, is a reference to a Japanese temple door. This is an early edition of the Japan Sofa, bearing the original sticker of FD; the first edition of the France & Søn logo. Sourced in Denmark, 1957.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989), originally intent on a path in art history, was steered towards architecture by his father, a decision that would shape his remarkable career. After completing his architectural studies, Juhl honed his skills working alongside Vilhelm Lauritzen for a decade. At the age of 33, he boldly ventured into furniture design, founding his own practice.

During the 1940s, Juhl unleashed a wave of innovation that revitalized Danish furniture, diverging sharply from traditional norms. Widely regarded as a pioneer of Danish design, he achieved unprecedented international acclaim, pioneering the global spread of the "Danish Modern" aesthetic. Juhl's creations are celebrated for their exquisite elegance, meticulous refinement down to the smallest detail, and impeccable craftsmanship.
