Italian “Samo” Carrara Marble Dining Table by Carlo Scarpa for Simon Gavina, 1971

$16,200.00

Designed by Carlo Scarpa for Simon Gavina in 1971, the “Samo” dining table is part of Scarpa’s celebrated Ultrarazionale collection.

Crafted entirely from Carrara marble, the table pairs a generous oval top with two deeply grooved pedestal bases, a detail that gives the marble an almost architectural quality. The design reflects Scarpa’s ability to bring the language of architecture into furniture.

The repeated vertical grooves of the bases recall fluted columns, while the oval top appears to float above them, creating an unexpected lightness against the weight of the solid marble. Viewed from different angles, the stepped profiles of the pedestals become an important part of the table’s character.

One of the most influential Italian architects and designers of the 20th century, Carlo Scarpa (1906–1978) was known for his extraordinary sensitivity to material, proportion, and craftsmanship. His furniture for Simon Gavina remains especially collectible, translating many of the ideas found throughout his architectural work into functional objects.
