Fluted Burl Wood Column Pedestal, 1970s - 1 Available

$2,200.00

A fluted burl wood pedestal from the 1970s, sourced in France, where material and form carry equal weight.

Rising to 42 inches, the column is articulated through vertical fluting, a rhythm that draws the eye upward while catching light along each softened edge. The silhouette nods to classical architecture, but the execution feels distinctly of its time—warmer, less rigid, shaped as much by the material as by the hand.

The surface is what defines it. Burl wood, with its clustered knots and irregular figuring, moves across the pedestal in shifting patterns—dense in some areas, open in others. The finish holds a deep amber tone, allowing the grain to read clearly without flattening its variation. No section repeats. The wood remains active, almost topographic.

At the top and base, the form softens into a scalloped edge. This subtle gesture breaks the strict verticality, giving the piece a quieter, more organic presence. It feels considered from every angle—something meant to be walked around, not just placed.

As with many designs of the period, it is not only a standalone object but a support for others. A vessel, a sculpture, a single object placed above it becomes part of the composition. The pedestal doesn’t compete—it frames, elevates, and organizes what surrounds it.
