French Art Deco Rosewood + Leather Desk by Jules Leleu, 1940s

Jules-Emile Leleu wasn’t simply a furniture maker — he was one of the architects of French Art Deco refinement.

Born just outside Paris in 1883, Leleu came from a family of decorative painters. He began in that world — studying painting, ornament, and classical proportion — before gradually moving into furniture. His pieces always feel composed, almost architectural.. 

Leleu opened Maison Leleu in Paris and quickly became one of the defining names of the era and completed major furniture + interior design commissions for the Élysée Palace, French embassies, and interiors for luxury ocean liners such as the SS Normandie, establishing him as one of the most trusted designers of his era.

By the 1940s, when this desk was made, Jules-Emile Leleu had refined his unmistakable French restraint — strong architectural lines, exacting craftsmanship, and precisely softened edges that balance discipline with quiet elegance.
