French Brutalist Rush + Oak Accent Chair by Victor Courtray, 1950s - 2 Available

$2,200.00

A French Brutalist accent chair by Victor Courtray, crafted in the Northern Basque region near Biarritz during the 1950s.

Constructed in solid oak, the chair is defined by its undulating silhouette. The legs move with a carved, almost rhythmic motion, softening the severity often associated with Brutalist design. The backrest rises in a restrained arch, giving the piece a vertical presence that feels architectural despite its modest scale.

Handwoven rush forms both the seat and back, introducing texture against the density of the oak frame. The weave brings warmth and tactility to the composition, emphasizing the handmade character of the chair and the regional traditions that inspired its construction.

Sold and priced individually.

Victor Courtray (1896–1987) was a French furniture designer and decorator known for combining regional craftsmanship with the refined sensibility of early modern design. After studying at the École Boulle and working with influential decorators including Maurice Dufrêne and Paul Follot, Courtray established his own studio, where his early work reflected the elegance of the Art Deco movement.

Following his move to southwestern France in 1924, he developed a distinctive Neo-Basque style rooted in local traditions and natural materials. His furniture is celebrated for its solid wood construction, woven rush seating, and sculptural yet restrained forms, balancing rustic warmth with understated sophistication. Today, Courtray’s oak and straw creations remain highly regarded among collectors of twentieth-century French design.
