French Classical Plaster Bas-Relief with Nereid + Hippocamps, 1940s

A French plaster bas-relief from the 1940s, depicting a classical marine scene drawn from the mythology and visual language of antiquity.

At its center, a female figure—likely a Nereid or sea nymph—moves through the composition alongside two hippocamps, the mythological sea horses that appear throughout ancient Greek and Roman art. Their bodies emerge in overlapping relief, with flowing manes, curling tails, and draped fabric creating a sense of movement across the surface. The arrangement feels both theatrical, translating the drama of a maritime myth into an architectural panel.

Rendered in plaster, the pale surface allows the carving itself to define the piece. Light catches along the raised figures and settles into the recessed details, giving the scene a shifting quality as the day moves across it.

DIMENSIONS: 29"W x 2.5"D x 23.5"H

ORIGIN: France

PERIOD: 1940s

MATERIALS: Plaster

CONDITION: Very good vintage condition. The surface displays a soft, natural patina and minor cracking, consistent with age.
