French Elm Desk by Maison Regain, 1970s

A French elm desk by Maison Regain, dating to the 1970s. Crafted from solid elm, the rectangular top is defined by softly rounded edges and a warm, honeyed tone that highlights the wood’s pronounced grain and natural figuring.

The desk is anchored by a robust frame with integrated drawer banks suspended beneath the top, while sculpted drawer fronts feature recessed, hand-carved pulls. The open central knee space balances the visual weight of the drawers, lending the composition a sense of lightness despite its solid construction.

Maison Regain was a French atelier active in the 1960s and '70s, celebrated for its architectural furniture. Working in the spirit of Pierre Chapo and Charlotte Perriand, the studio embraced a Brutalist ethos tempered by warmth—emphasizing pure forms, honest joinery, and the expressive grain of French hardwoods.

Each piece reflects a distinctly regional modernism: minimalist yet grounded, rustic yet exacting. Maison Regain’s work continues to resonate for its refined balance of mass, material, and restraint.
