French Terracotta Vase by Charles Greber, 1920s

$3,800.00

A 1920s French terracotta vase by Charles Gréber (1853–1935), executed in the spirit of ancient Greek pottery through its use of the black-figure technique. Against the warm, earthen ground, a central Triton, mythological sea deity with the torso of a man and the tail of a fish, unfurls across the rounded body, rendered in silhouette with finely articulated detailing.

Encircling the form are classic Hellenic motifs: a continuous meander (Greek key) band at the midpoint and stylized palmette patterns crowning the shoulder and base. These graphic elements lend rhythm and structure to the composition, reinforcing the vessel’s balanced proportions and classical influence.

The rich terracotta surface carries a soft matte depth, contrasting beautifully with the dark figural decoration. Marked “Greber Beauvais,” the vase reflects Gréber’s celebrated production in Beauvais and his engagement with historic forms reinterpreted for the early 20th century.
