French Two-Tier Iron + Chiseled Glass Side Table, 1960s

$4,800.00

Material and process converge in this French two-tier side table from the 1960s, where glass and iron are brought into an uncommon dialogue, each worked with the same insistence on texture and presence.

The structure is anchored in forged iron, its vertical supports rising with an irregularity that resists strict symmetry. Each leg bears the marks of shaping, subtle undulations, slight shifts in line, evidence of heat and force guiding the material into form. The lower stretcher curves inward and outward in a restrained gesture, grounding the piece while maintaining a sense of lift.

Resting within this framework are two thick glass surfaces, each substantial in weight and character. Rather than being simply cut and polished, the glass has been cast and then cold-worked by hand.

Its edges carry the memory of chisels and grinding wheels, possibly even point work before being softened and resolved. The result is a continuous, sculpted perimeter, irregular, tactile, and deeply considered.

This treatment gives the glass an unexpected density. It does not disappear into transparency, but holds light within it, catching and refracting along its worked edges. The surface remains clear, but the perimeter becomes active, almost geological, shifting in tone and intensity as light moves across it.

What distinguishes the piece is the shared language between materials. The iron and the glass, though fundamentally different, are treated with a similar sensitivity to texture. Both reveal the hand, both carry the time of their making. It is this parallel approach that binds the composition together, allowing the contrast between solidity and transparency to feel intentional rather than opposed.

More than a functional object, it reads as a work shaped over time. Each surface, each edge, each junction speaks to an extended process of making, where material was not rushed, but worked, reconsidered, and brought slowly into resolution.
