Japanese “Akari 45X” Pendant No. 01 by Isamu Noguchi for Ozeki & Co. Japanese, 1970s - 2 Available
A Japanese pendant by Isamu Noguchi for Ozeki & Co., produced in the 1970s as part of the celebrated Akari light sculpture series.
The “Akari 45X” is defined by its geometry. A square form replaces the softness of the more familiar globe silhouettes, giving the piece an architectural presence that feels both structured and weightless. Crafted from washi paper stretched over a delicate ribbed frame, the surface reveals the subtle irregularities and texture that distinguish Akari from industrial lighting.
When illuminated, the shade diffuses light with a warm, ambient glow, allowing the natural character of the paper to become part of the experience. The horizontal folds create a gentle rhythm across the surface, while the crisp edges of the form introduce a sense of balance and restraint.
Noguchi conceived the Akari series as a meeting point between sculpture and utility, drawing on traditional Japanese lantern-making techniques while reimagining them for modern interiors. In the 45X, that vision is expressed through simplicity—light transformed into an object that shapes atmosphere as much as it illuminates a room.
Sold and priced individually.

Renowned for his organic forms and exploration of natural materials, Noguchi created everything from monumental public sculptures and gardens to furniture and lighting.
