Large Italian Murano Glass Chandelier Attributed to Toni Zuccheri for Venini, 1960s

Hand-pulled Murano glass forms the foundation of this 1960s chandelier, attributed to Toni Zuccheri for Venini—each element shaped in heat and suspended in quiet balance.

The chandelier is composed of a cascading arrangement of elongated, hand-worked glass elements.  Each piece begins as a gather of molten glass, pulled from the furnace while still glowing and pliable. Rather than being blown into molds, the forms are drawn out by hand—stretched downward while hot, allowing gravity to influence their length and subtle irregularity.

That process remains visible in the surface. The ripples and striations aren’t applied—they’re the result of the glass cooling in motion, guided but never over-controlled. Small shifts in heat or timing create variation, which is why no two elements feel exactly the same.

Once formed, the glass is slowly cooled to stabilize it, then drilled and assembled onto the frame. Each piece hangs with slight variation, giving the chandelier a sense of movement—both in its composition and in the way it carries light.

Zuccheri often looked to nature—not to replicate it, but to understand its rhythm. Trained as an architect and active in Italy during the 1950's  he brought a sculptural sensitivity to his collaborations with Venini, where he explored glass as something living rather than fixed. You can feel that here. The form gathers and falls as if shaped by gravity and time, each element drawn downward like a lengthening icicle or a cluster of reeds at the water’s edge. 

What sets this piece apart is not only its form, but the way it was made. Each element is individually worked—never molded—resulting in a depth, softness, and subtle variation that cannot be replicated through modern production.

Attributed to Venini, one of Murano’s most revered glassmakers, it reflects a tradition where material, light, and craftsmanship are held in equal regard. Pieces of this nature were never produced in large quantities, and even fewer have remained so beautifully intact over time.

Murano has been at the center of glassmaking for centuries, with techniques passed down through generations. This piece carries that history in a quiet way—not through perfection, but through the evidence of the hand.

When lit, the effect is soft and layered. The textured glass catches light unevenly, diffusing it and giving the chandelier a glowing presence.
