Norwegian Stone Top Coffee Table by Erling Viksjø for Conglo Designs, 1960s

$8,400.00

A Norwegian coffee table by Erling Viksjø for Conglo Designs from the 1960s. The rectangular top is crafted in stone and concrete, its surface revealing a richly textured aggregate pattern. Subtle variations in tone and composition lend the piece an organic character, while the top is fully reversible, offering versatility in presentation and use.

The table rests on a finely constructed wooden base with clean, architectural lines that balance the weight and tactility of the top. Block legs and a restrained apron underscore the Scandinavian commitment to honest materials and thoughtful proportion.

Both functional and expressive, the design reflects Viksjø’s sensitivity to structure and surface, uniting craftsmanship with modernist simplicity.

Norwegian architect Erling Viksjø (1910 - 1971) was a pioneering figure in postwar modernism, known for his bold use of concrete and his innovative integration of art into architecture. Often associated with Brutalism, his buildings were animated through collaborations with artists such as Pablo Picasso, Carl Nesjar, and Synnøve Anker Aurdal.

Viksjø also extended his design sensibility to furniture, creating terrazzo-topped tables and other pieces that reflected his architectural style. Born in Trondheim in 1910, he studied at the Norwegian Institute of Technology and worked in Oslo at Ove Bang’s office before establishing his own firm after World War II, during which he was imprisoned for over a year. He co-invented and patented the sandblasted concrete technique in 1950, enabling textured surfaces ideal for integrated art.

Notable projects include the Tromsø Bridge, Bakkehaugen Church, and the Standard Telefon Kabelfabrikk office building. Viksjø died in Oslo in 1971, leaving a lasting legacy in Norwegian architecture.
