Antique French Art Nouveau Cast Metal Wall Mirror by A. Lesueur
An early 1900s antique French wall mirror in patinated cast metal, signed A. Lesueur at the lower right. The frame unfolds in a fluid, organic composition characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Branch-like lines rise and curve around the mirror plate, creating openwork passages that give the piece a sense of lightness despite the solidity of the cast metal.
At the crest, a sculpted iris bloom emerges from the flowing structure, accompanied by delicately modeled leaves that arc across the upper edge. The botanical motif—one of the defining visual languages of Art Nouveau—appears here with remarkable softness, the metal worked to suggest the suppleness of stems and petals.
The surface carries a rich, naturally developed patina, shifting between deep bronze and verdigris tones that accentuate the relief of the casting. Both sculptural and decorative, the piece reads as much as a work of art as it does a functional mirror.
