French Art Deco Oak Side Table Attributed to Francisque Chaleyssin, 1940s

$5,000.00

A French Art Deco side table from the 1940s, attributed to Francisque Chaleyssin.

Built in solid oak with a weight that is visually grounded but carefully lifted through carved negative space. Its most distinctive gesture lies in the lower runners, which curve and extend into a stylized “G” or hook-like profile—an unmistakable Chaleyssin motif that transforms structural support into sculptural language. This continuous line softens the rigidity of the frame, allowing the table to appear both anchored and in motion.

The top surface is composed of inset ceramic drawer fronts that introduce a contrasting material. The glazed tiles sit flush within the wood, their pale, muted tones catching light differently than the surrounding grain—cool against the warmth of oak. These drawer elements are integrated rather than applied, reinforcing the sense of the table as a unified composition rather than an assemblage of parts.

Francisque Chaleyssin (1872–1951) was a French cabinetmaker based in Lyon, renowned for his contributions during the Art Deco and early modernist periods. The Chaleyssin Company was originally founded by his father, and in 1896, he and his brother took over the business, with Francisque taking the lead as its creative force. Francisque began producing replicas of antique furniture, showcasing his skilled craftsmanship. By 1912, the company adopted the name Mercier & Chaleyssin.

Francisque's work often featured intricate carved details, luxurious materials such as oak and exotic woods, and decorative elements that emphasized the natural grain or texture of the materials.
