French Ceramic Dark Glaze Table Lamp by Bruno H’Rdy, 1970s

A French ceramic table lamp by Bruno H’Rdy, created in La Borne during the 1970s, where the expressive language of studio pottery meets the function of everyday design.

Thrown in stoneware, the rounded form is deeply tactile. Layers of dark, iron-rich glaze wrap the surface, interrupted by a band of heavily textured relief that recalls weathered rock, tree bark, or eroded landscapes. The contrast between the rough, sculptural upper section and the smooth, burnished lower body reflects H’Rdy’s sensitivity to material, allowing the clay itself to become the ornament. 

Signed by the artist, the lamp carries the unmistakable character of La Borne, a village long associated with some of France’s most celebrated ceramic traditions.

Paired with a woven linen shade, the natural textures complement the depth of the ceramic with a soft, understated texture, casting a gentle, ambient glow that enhances the richness of the glaze and the relief of the hand-worked surface.

Bruno H’Dry (1945–1991) was a French ceramist associated with the celebrated pottery tradition of La Borne in the Cher region of France. After studying at the École des Métiers d’Art in Paris, he trained under renowned ceramist Jean Lerat, whose influence helped shape his deep respect for traditional stoneware techniques and wood-fired ceramics. In 1972, H’Dry and his wife, ceramist Danielle H’Dry, established their workshop in Menetou-Salon after discovering the creative community of La Borne.

Working primarily in stoneware, H’Dry created both functional and decorative ceramics distinguished by their refined forms, rich ash glazes, and individually crafted surfaces. He personally prepared his clay, mixed his own glazes from natural minerals, and oversaw every stage of the wood-firing process, producing unique works rather than serial designs. His ceramics were exhibited in galleries and craft salons throughout France, and today they are appreciated for their exceptional craftsmanship and their connection to the enduring ceramic tradition of La Borne.
