French Green + Brown Ceramic Wall Mirror in the manner of Roger Capron, 1960s

$1,800.00

This Vallauris ceramic tile wall mirror, created in France in the 1960s, crafted in the manner of Roger Capron is a study in rhythm and surface, where repetition is softened by the irregularities of the hand.

The frame is composed of individually formed ceramic tiles, each one shaped rather than standardized. Their edges shift subtly, their faces rise and fall with minute variations, creating a perimeter that resists strict geometry. The structure is orderly, yet never rigid, held together by a quiet cadence rather than exact symmetry.

Glazes in tones of green and brown move across the tiles with a natural fluidity. Some surfaces deepen into earthy, rich browns, while others open into softer, vegetal greens. The transitions are not uniform; they pool, break, and recede, forming a layered patina that feels organic, almost landscape-like in its depth.

Pressed into many of the tiles are botanical impressions, leaves and simple plant forms captured directly in the clay. These markings are not overly defined; they appear as traces rather than illustrations, their lines softened by glaze and firing. They emerge and recede depending on the light, offering moments of quiet detail within the broader composition.

The mirror itself sits cleanly within this textured border, its reflective plane providing a still counterpoint to the tactile frame. Where the tiles absorb and diffuse light, the glass returns it, creating a dialogue between surface and reflection, opacity and clarity.

Suspended by a simple cord, the piece retains a sense of informality. It does not rely on heavy mounting or elaborate framing, but instead suggests an object that can be placed with ease, its presence defined more by material than by installation.

Created in the spirit of Roger Capron, the mirror reflects the ethos of Vallauris ceramics in the mid-20th century, where craft, repetition, and natural motifs were brought into everyday objects. There is a balance here between design and spontaneity, between the intention of pattern and the unpredictability of glaze and kiln.

What distinguishes this piece is the accumulation of small differences. No single tile dominates, yet none are identical. Together, they form a surface that feels alive, shaped through process rather than imposed order.
