French Rattan + Glass Side Table, 1960s

$2,200.00

Soft curvature and continuous line define this French rattan and glass side table from the 1960s, where structure is shaped through bending rather than joining, and form unfolds in a single, fluid gesture.

The base is composed of woven rattan, wrapped and guided into a looping profile that turns downward, under, and back up again without interruption. There are no abrupt transitions, only a steady rhythm of curves that give the piece its sense of ease. The open weave introduces lightness, allowing air and space to move through the form rather than around it.

This sense of continuity carries confidence. The rattan holds its shape with surprising strength, yet retains a visual softness, its honeyed tone warming the silhouette and emphasizing the handwoven texture. Subtle variations in the weave reveal the cadence of making, each strand placed with intention, each curve resolved by hand.

Resting above, a glass top introduces a point of contrast. Its clarity sharpens the outline of the base, tracing the form beneath while remaining visually unobtrusive. The edge catches light in a fine line, a highlight that shifts as one moves around the piece. It does not compete with the rattan, but completes it, adding a layer of stillness above the movement below.

There is a natural dialogue between the materials. The woven base brings warmth, tactility, and rhythm; the glass offers calm, reflection, and pause. Together, they create a balance between structure and openness, weight and lightness.

Placed within a space, the table feels both present and unassuming. It does not assert itself through mass, but through line and proportion, an object that invites proximity, where the eye follows its curves and settles into its continuous form.
