German Mixed Media on Paper Painting No. 03 by Franz Hirsch

$650.00

A German mixed media work on paper by Franz Hirsch, built through a layered process that merges printmaking, painting, and drawing into a single expressive image.

At the center is a startled male figure, his head tilted upward and mouth slightly open, caught in a fleeting moment of surprise or revelation. Rather than describing the subject through precise detail, Hirsch constructs the figure through fragments of color, texture, and gesture, allowing emotion to emerge before narrative.

The composition begins with a monotype print foundation, visible in the textured passages and atmospheric fields that frame the figure. Over this printed base, watercolor washes and gouache pigments are layered to develop both form and space. Transparent areas dissolve into denser painted surfaces, creating a dynamic interplay between lightness and weight. Graphite and charcoal accents introduce a final graphic element, sharpening contours while preserving the spontaneity of the image.

Signed by the artist, a palette of warm ochres, amber yellows, olive greens, and muted earth tones gives the work a luminous quality, while the figure appears suspended within an abstract interior.

Franz Hirsch (1924–2010) was a German painter based in Munich whose work reflects the expressive spirit of postwar European modernism. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold compositions, rich color, and an interest in the emotional qualities of everyday subjects, landscapes, and the human figure.

A founding member of the Free Academy of Munich (Freie Akademie München), Hirsch was an active participant in the city's artistic community and exhibited throughout Bavaria during his lifetime. His diverse body of work was the subject of numerous regional exhibitions, including a retrospective presentation at Galerie Entoderweder in Dorfen in 2009. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their painterly energy, strong visual presence, and balance between abstraction and representation.
