German Monoprint + Block Print No. 10 by Franz Hirsch

$450.00

Rendered in a muted cream-yellow ink on paper, a German monoprint by Franz Hirsch.

The composition is defined by a network of organic marks, pitted textures, and irregular negative spaces. The surface feels almost geological, as though formed through erosion rather than design. Areas of ink gather and recede across the sheet, revealing the subtle imperfections that occur when pigment is transferred from plate to paper, each variation recording a moment of contact between the two.

The monoprint process lends the work a singular character. Unlike an editioned print, the image carries the unrepeatable qualities of a single impression—slight shifts in pressure, ink distribution, and surface texture becoming integral to the composition.

Throughout the piece, the tactile qualities of the medium remain visible. Cell-like voids and granular passages create a rhythmic field of marks, while the restrained palette allows attention to settle on texture and form. The artist’s pencil signature at the lower edge serves as a reminder of the hand behind the work, anchoring the abstract surface in authorship.

Franz Hirsch (1924–2010) was a German painter based in Munich whose work reflects the expressive spirit of postwar European modernism. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold compositions, rich color, and an interest in the emotional qualities of everyday subjects, landscapes, and the human figure.

A founding member of the Free Academy of Munich (Freie Akademie München), Hirsch was an active participant in the city's artistic community and exhibited throughout Bavaria during his lifetime. His diverse body of work was the subject of numerous regional exhibitions, including a retrospective presentation at Galerie Entoderweder in Dorfen in 2009. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their painterly energy, strong visual presence, and balance between abstraction and representation.
