German Relief Print + Linocut No. 12 by Franz Hirsch
A German relief print and linocut on paper by Franz Hirsch, this work shows black inked forms carried over a warmer ground of layered brown and copper tones.
The three abstracted figures remain fixed in their structural relationship—standing close, unified through gesture and proximity—yet the surrounding field changes everything, the deeper, earthbound surface, where copper and umber accumulate in soft gradients and uneven rolls. The background feels less like reflection and more like sediment, as though the image has been slowly built rather than struck in a single impression.
The carved linocut lines retain their sharp authority, cutting through the warmth of the ground with deliberate contrast. Each contour carries the memory of the hand that carved it, while the slight irregularities of the print reveal the physical pressure of the press. Because the same block is reused, the figures feel familiar yet displaced—like a remembered scene recalled under different light.
Across the composition, the relationship between figure and field becomes more atmospheric. The brown-copper matrix softens the starkness, allowing the forms to sit deeper within the surface rather than against it.
Franz Hirsch (1924–2010) was a German painter based in Munich whose work reflects the expressive spirit of postwar European modernism. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold compositions, rich color, and an interest in the emotional qualities of everyday subjects, landscapes, and the human figure.
A founding member of the Free Academy of Munich (Freie Akademie München), Hirsch was an active participant in the city's artistic community and exhibited throughout Bavaria during his lifetime. His diverse body of work was the subject of numerous regional exhibitions, including a retrospective presentation at Galerie Entoderweder in Dorfen in 2009. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their painterly energy, strong visual presence, and balance between abstraction and representation.
