Pair of French Model '1284' Sconces by Maison Arlus, 1950s

$4,400.00

A pair of French Model '1284' sconces by Maison Arlus from the 1950s, where architectural precision meets the warmth of mid-century craftsmanship.

Defined by their balanced composition, each sconce combines slender black metal supports with perforated steel shades that filter both light and shadow. Brass detailing introduces a refined contrast, while the opaline glass diffusers soften the illumination into a warm, ambient glow.

The silhouette feels equally decorative and functional. Delicate in profile yet grounded by strong geometric lines, the sconces bring rhythm to a wall without overwhelming it. The perforated shades add depth and texture, allowing subtle patterns of light to emerge while concealing the source itself.

Maison Arlus was a French lighting manufacturer active from the 1940s through the 1970s, best known for its refined modern designs that balanced clean lines with luxurious materials. The company collaborated with prominent designers, including Jacques Biny, producing chandeliers, sconces, and table lamps in brass, lacquered metal, glass, and crystal that reflected the evolving tastes of mid-century French interiors. Today, Maison Arlus is celebrated for its craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic. Its lighting remains highly sought after by collectors and designers for its sculptural forms, quality construction, and ability to complement both classic and contemporary spaces.
