Belgian Ceramic Zodiac Motif Coffee Table by Monique Van Vinckenroy, 1950s

$6,800.00

A Belgian coffee table from the 1950s by painter and ceramicist Monique Van Vinckenroy, where the language of ceramics transforms a functional object into an expressive work of art.

The elongated top is composed of crafted ceramic tiles, each finished in a soft, chalky glaze that reveals subtle tonal variation across the surface. Scattered throughout are delicate blue zodiac motifs—small, individually rendered symbols that introduce moments of discovery, giving the composition a sense of rhythm without strict repetition.

A slim black metal frame provides a crisp architectural outline, elevating the ceramic surface with a sense of lightness. The simplicity of the base is intentional, allowing Van Vinckenroy's hand-painted decoration to remain the focal point while balancing the table's long, linear proportions.

Its generous scale makes it equally suited to anchoring a seating arrangement or extending through a larger living space, where the tiled surface invites both everyday use and closer observation. As light shifts across the glaze, the individual motifs reveal themselves gradually, rewarding attention over time.

Belgian painter and ceramicist Monique Van Vinckenroy (1937–2023) was known for her expressive paintings and handcrafted ceramics inspired by the natural world. Working in rich, earthy palettes, she created atmospheric landscapes, sculptural ceramic vessels, and organic forms that balanced painterly sensitivity with tactile craftsmanship. Her work reflects the enduring tradition of 20th-century Belgian art, blending artistic expression with a deep appreciation for nature.
